TO CARRY ON THE WORK OF JESUS IN THE WORLD TODAY. Welcome to the United Reformed Church Grove Gomersal web site. On these pages you will find information about our Church including our services and beliefs, regular activities, our involvement with Fairtrade and with the community, along with our diary and a message from our minister Revd Alison Termie. Our Sunday morning worship begins with a Family Service at 10.30 am, consisting of a short informal time of worship designed to meet the needs of young people and children (but not excluding the occasional youthful octogenarian). This is followed by Junior Church group work for the children and young people, and worship for the adults. Regularly on the second Sunday of each month, and on other special occasions, we celebrate Holy Communion. Our Evening Worship starts at 6.00 p.m. when we are joined by our Pilot company for a short time before they leave for their Pilot activities. We often celebrate important dates in the Christian calendar with special services such as our Harvest Festival and Christmas Festival services. Worship is sometimes led by one of our three Worship Groups and an additional group often leads services at other churches in SPACE. DEADLINE FOR FEBRUARY NEWSLETTER: 15 JANUARY

Dear Friends

At this festive time we tend to focus in on Jesus coming to earth and being born in a way which many of us can recognise. That God should choose to identify with humanity and become ‘the Word made flesh’ in John 1 tells us a lot about our relationship with him. Its personal and expressed in a way that we can touch, feel and know.

So as we oldies like to do- look back and say where has that year gone to?- we can look at the life of God as Jesus on earth and wonder – where did that life go to?

A baby has lots of hope and promises heaped upon it. Jesus as God in human form has lots of hopes and promises heaped on him. I pray that we will all continue to know the love and presence of God every day in our lives.

May the joy and peace of Christmas fill you throughout the coming year.

Blessings

Sue

This has been a shorter letter because I wanted to share with you the editorial letter from the Autumn Magazine of CWM- Inside Out. When we gaze at the baby Jesus do we wonder what he will become like for us and in our lives? Maybe this will open up a new discussion for us as we spend another year together.

What if the church were more like Jesus?
It does not take more than a cursory reading of the gospels to see that what Jesus intended to establish on earth was more than getting everybody to go to church.
But it may highlight how much of church activity is about sustaining structures and programmes rather than realising a vision of life for the whole of creation.
Jesus brought together the most ambitious vision — to reconcile all things to God, and a series of small actions. His ministry included taking time to speak with women and children, offering healing to the sick, preparing breakfast for tired and confused fishermen.
The domestic nature of so much of what Jesus did does not conceal that his self-emptying ministry brings about the ultimate plan of God, to redeem and renew all of creation.
Yet the Body of Christ still often behaves as if the building and strengthening of the church should be the focal point of Christian ministry.
Song Hye Won, a participant in Training in Mission 2010 concludes her year of learning and practice of mission saying: “Jesus is concrete. His knowledge, teaching and practical life were in unity. I want to gather all I know and keep it always in the forefront of my mind so it becomes embodied in my lifestyle. I want to be a producer of hope. There are people in need, and I want to help create a realisation of the Kingdom of God in their lives and mine.
Some churches are revisiting this challenge — to become missional churches, to make God’s plan for the whole of creation central to their life and work.
Those that do, build a church that is more like Jesus.

FROM THE ARCHIVE

Dec 29th

Report….

The Singing class which commenced about 18 months ago continues to make satisfactory progress.  40 meetings have been held during the year with an average attendance of 28.  The year commenced 41 members; through various causes 14 have left and ten have been admitted, leaving the present number 37 or 7 less than when the class first commenced.  Two very successful entertainments have been given by the members under the leadership of Mrs S. Crabtree since the class was formed.  The attendance of friends on each occasion was encouraging for which the members desire to express their thanks.
