The Bread of Life Breakfast Service

Every Sunday morning from 8.00 am to 9.30 am in the Church Hall

A special service of thanksgiving for twenty years of outreach to the homeless of Doncaster was held on 27th November 2010 when we gave thanks to God for the work of the Bread of Life Breakfast Service.

The service was led by our minister, Rev Phil Baiden, and the sermon was preached by Rev John Marsh, Moderator of the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church for 2008 - 2010 

The service was attended by volunteers and supporters both past and present, and during the service the volunteers and church members re-committed themselves to supporting homeless people in Doncaster in a common act of re-dedication.

It was in November 1990 that we first opened our doors for a drop-in for homeless people. What started as simply providing a cup if tea in a warm place, and the opportunity to wash and shave soon  developed into the service we provide today. We offer a free breakfast of cereal, bacon sandwich and tea, together with the opportunity to sit and talk. We provide washing, showering and shaving facilities, and replacement clothing and blankets where needed. Dirty clothing may be left to be washed during the week and collected the following week. In addition, we provide people with a sandwich lunch to take away with them.

There is also information, leaflets and booklets to support and help those who come to move on, and to signpost them to other providers

Although part of the mission and outreach of Hall Gate United Reformed Church, volunteers are from other local churches as well as non-church people. In April 2010 most of our kitchen staff updated their training to achieve the HABC Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering. The Breakfast Service is financed by the volunteers themselves, and by generous donations from many sources. Many friends keep us well stocked in good quality second hand clothes
