We are a joint pastorate with our sister United Reformed Church in Intake.

Although we are two autonomous congregations, we seek to work more closely together.

We have a common preaching team of lay people from both congregations including nationally accredited lay preachers, ‘Training for Learning and Serving’ students and a theology graduate.

Our Mission and Ministry

We offer a fairly traditional style of worship with strong musical accompaniment.

Occasionally we experiment with differing forms of worship, mainly at our evening service.

We seek to serve, help and support those with skills, qualifications and experience who work with the town centre 'community' - whether church members, local charities or professional agencies.

We also wish to explore new ways of being a community church.

We have worked with the homeless and disadvantaged since 1990. For more information about our “Bread of Life Breakfast Service” click here.

Emmaus Course

We are currently engaged in following the Emmaus Course, to equip members to witness to the Gospel outside the church environment. We meet on Sundays following morning worship at intervals of approximately 6 weeks, and always begin by sharing a meal together.

Bible Study

A small group led by one of the leaders of the House Group which meets to study the Word of God in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, meeting approximately monthly in the afternoons in the Coffee Lounge. It is held during the daytime to enable people who do not wish to come out at night to engage in bible study, and would welcome more members

House Group

Meetings of the House Group begin by sharing in prayer concerns for the whole church family and others known to the group. It meets on the second Tuesday of each month in the evening in the homes of members, and seeks to give members the opportunity to learn and speak about their faith. Involvement in the House Group challenges members to apply what they talk about to their daily lives, and to grow to know God’s will

At the beginning of November 2007 members of our church visited the Mosque in the centre of Doncaster.

We were shown round by members of the
Islamic Society Doncaster who explained all about
their customs and practices for prayers.

Following the visit we shared lunch together at the Doncaster Tandoori in Copley Road where
we talked about the development of Christianity in Britain and in particular the emergence of the various Christian denominations.

Visit to Doncaster Mosque
Our visit to the mosque followed a visit by members
of Islamic Society Doncaster to our church
in September 2006, when we shared lunch together in the church hall.

Following lunch we were given a presentation about Islam and in particular about the things that were common to our two faiths.

We hope to build upon these links
with our Muslim friends in the future,
to develop greater mutual understanding and foster harmony between our two faith communities

On Monday 15th December 2008, Hall Gate Church Secretary Rod Morrison joined board members of Hope08 at 10 Downing Street. Gordon Brown and national church leaders honoured Hope08 and all the projects that have happened across the UK.

Hope08 is a national initiative that is encouraging churches to work together across denominations in serving their local communities. This year has been enormously successful, with 1500 locations delivering social action projects to those around them.

Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, Prime Minister said that “People of faith have been at the heart of just about every social movement that has transformed society in this country, from the abolition of slavery through to Make Poverty History. I applaud all those involved in Hope08".

The Rt Hon Stephen Timms MP, the Vice President for Faith in the Labour Party, said that ‘there is no doubt that Hope08 has succeeded in offering hope to people’.

He went on to say that this hope was ‘not the wishy washy maybe everything will get better kind of hope but the roll up your sleeves and actually do something about it kind of hope’.

All the Hope08 champions who were invited to the reception are part of Hope08 projects that are carrying on into 2009.

In a recent press release, Rod Morrison says “For the many homeless people in the town centre, hope is provided through the church’s ‘Bread of Life Breakfast Service’. Open every Sunday morning from 8.00 am to 9.30 am, the service provides breakfast in a warm and friendly atmosphere and the opportunity to sit and talk. A shower is available, as are fresh clothes, both new and second hand, and the opportunity to have dirty ones washed. We can supply bedding or sleeping bags, and with the support of other organisations in the town we can provide other equipment for anyone moving in to new accommodation. When people leave at the end of the morning we give them a pack of freshly made sandwiches, fruit and a biscuit to sustain them through the day. This is just one of a number of initiatives run by members of churches and other groups in the town which support homeless people”

Steve Clifford, Hope08 chairman, describes the event as ‘absolutely fantastic - I had no idea that Hope08 would have such a high profile as it did’.
